Why do I need this medicine?
Tegafur and Uracil are combined together in this medicine.

Tegafur + Uracil is used on its own or together with other medicines to treat certain types of cancer.
How do I take this medicine?
Take Tegafur + Uracil exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Take this medicine at least 1 hour before or after meals. Try to take it at the same time each day.

Swallow the capsule whole with plenty of water. Do not divide, chew or crush the capsule.

The dose of Tegafur + Uracil will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe depending on the type and severity of your condition.
What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
When should I not use this medicine?
Do not take Tegafur + Uracil if you are pregnant or planning to have a baby soon. If you become pregnant while being treated with this medicine, alert your doctor immediately. This medicine may cause harm to your unborn child. Discuss the use of appropriate birth control methods with your doctor while being treated with Tegafur + Uracil.

Do not take this medicine if you are breastfeeding.

Do not take this medicine with sorivudine, a medicine used to treat viral infections.
What should I take note of while taking this medicine?
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • bone marrow suppression (a condition in which the blood cells are low)
  • stomach ulcer or bleeding
  • blocked bowel
  • infections e.g. chickenpox
  • heart disease or history of heart disease
  • liver disease
  • kidney disease
Inform your doctor if you underwent radiation therapy.

Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving this medicine to an elderly. The elderly may be more sensitive to the side effects.

Wear gloves when handling Tegafur + Uracil to minimise any skin contact. If contact with broken capsules occurs, wash your hands immediately and thoroughly.

For as long as you are taking this medicine, you may need to have regular blood tests to check your body’s response to Tegafur + Uracil. You may also need to have regular tests for liver and kidney function. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these tests.
What side effects could I experience?
Tegafur + Uracil may cause any of the following side effects: tiredness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, stomach pain, appetite loss, soreness of the mouth or tongue, hair loss and skin discolouration.

This medicine may also cause you to be more sensitive to sunlight. Apply sunscreen when going outdoors and avoid direct or prolonged exposure to sunlight and UV lamps.

Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
  • signs and symptoms of liver problems e.g. yellowing of the skin or eyes, stomach pain, tiredness, nausea, vomiting, feeling unwell, disorientation or confusion
  • increase of four to six stools per day
  • frequent and persistent sore throat with fever, unusual bleeding or bruising
  • chest pain
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Can I take this with other medicines?
Do not take Tegafur + Uracil with sorivudine, a medicine used to treat viral infections.

Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
  • other medicines used to treat cancer e.g. tegafur, gimeracil and oteracil combination
  • medicine for epilepsy (fits or seizures) e.g. phenytoin
  • blood-thinning medicine e.g. warfarin
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with this medicine.

Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicine, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
What special dietary instructions should I follow?
Avoid alcohol.
How should I store this medicine?
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

As this is a cancer medicine, always return any unused or expired capsules to the clinic, hospital or pharmacy for disposal. Do not throw it away in the household waste.
